Whereas we have resisted taking photos of hundreds of gas stations along Route 6, some are irresistible. The style shown in this 1998 photo is common to the Great Plains. This one is in Sterling.

Among numerous historically
significant railroad stations along Route 6 is this Union Pacific depot in
Sterling. This branch of the Union Pacific, which Route 6 parallels for
only a few miles between Sterling and Fort Morgan, was an important link
between Denver and the UP's main line northeast of here. (July 1998 photo)

For decades the Graham Hotel served travellers on Route 6, which ran right by the front door (1920s postcard). The July 1998 photo on the right shows the same scene without the hotel, a tree-shrouded bank having taken its place. |
