Jefferson County, Colorado

Between Idaho Springs and Golden is one of the most scenic stretches of Route 6.  This 1950s Standard Oil highway map of Denver shows how both U. S. Routes 6 and 40 connected Idaho Springs with Denver. In spite of I-70's intrusion into the scene, Route 6 today still follows the same path along Clear Creek from Idaho Springs to Golden, then into Denver on what would become the 6th Avenue Freeway.

Route 6 passes though numerous tunnels along Clear Creek. Pictured above is the sixth tunnel west of Golden in a July 1998 photo.
